Common language agreed for carbon footprintingJanuary 2010

Green Building Councils across the world and the UNEP Sustainable Building and Climate Initiative (UNEP SBCI) have agreed to adopt a common global language for the measurement of the carbon footprint of buildings.

The common carbon metric will be piloted by the leading green building rating tools, and made available to all organisations promoting the understanding and development of a low-carbon and sustainable built environment.

Paul King, chief executive of the UK Green Building Council hailed the "landmark agreement" that will enable the carbon footprint of buildings to be described "in a robust and consistent way".

"I am particularly pleased that BREEAM will be working in partnership with other leading rating tools owned and operated by Green Building Councils around the world to embed this common language of carbon metrics in its tools here in the UK," added King.

Donna McIntire, of the UNEP Sustainable Building and Climate Initiative said: "Common metrics are the keys to consistent measurement and reporting of performance - opening the door for flexible mechanisms and entry into the carbon market".
