BSRIA releases ventilation test results for CLGJanuary 2010

BSRIA has just released a technical report containing the results of the recent testing of ventilation for combustion in airtight homes carried out on behalf of CLG

BSRIA carried out this experimental study as part of the proposed revision of Part J and its associated guidance and with the main objective to test the assumptions regarding the sufficiency of adventitious permanent ventilation for combustion of open flue appliances in air tight homes.

The full BSRIA's teschnical report Air Supply for Combustion Apliances in Airtight Homes can be viewed via this link

Background to this BSRIA's reserach and testing study

Requirement J1 of the Building Regulations requires that combustion appliances are so installed that there is an adequate supply of air to them for combustion. Approved Document J gives guidance on minimum standards for permanent ventilation openings taking into account assumptions about the amount of "adventitious" ventilation that occurs through leaks in the building fabric.

These assumptions may no longer be valid for properties built to the current requirements nor if air tightness requirements are further increased.

The purpose of the BSRIA study is to provide an evidence base to allow CLG and BRAC to consider the options for amending the guidance with respect to the provision of permanent ventilation for combustion of open flue appliances under the Building Regulations. The main objectives of the BSRIA's work were to:

  • Make initial recommendations from a desk based study to be incorporated into a wider public consultation on proposed changes to Part J
  • Test the assumptions regarding the sufficiency of adventitious permanent ventilation for combustion of open flue appliances
  • Advise on any comments received in response to the public consultation. Produce a series of recommendations for possible amendments to Part J for consideration by CLG
