BSRIA exhibiting at Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design ConferenceNovember 2015

Joe Mazzon, BSRIA Graduate Engineer
BSRIA will be exhibiting at the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design Conference at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London on Friday 13th November 2015. The event will highlight the shortage of built environment professionals with sustainable design skills and will debate how to significantly increase the number of professionals who have the skills to substantially reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry.

The one-day free conference is part of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s four Centres of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design events and is supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

Bringing together organisations from different sectors across the architectural and engineering professions, including outreach bodies, universities, professional institutions and industry, who all contribute to and influence the recruitment, education, development and retention of young built environment professionals, there will be an open debate with an expert panel addressing these issues:

  • How can we increase A-level student’s awareness of ‘Building Physics’ and ‘Sustainable Design for the Built Environment’ and recruit them into further/higher education?
  • What are the key skills industry requires to deliver sustainable design and how can education providers help?
  • How can professional organisations, accreditation bodies and industry work together to encourage and support courses that produce graduates with multidisciplinary understanding and skills in sustainable design?
  • With less than 50 per cent of Engineering graduates staying in the engineering field and less than 50 per cent of registering architecture students achieving chartership – how can we work together to retain graduates in this specific field?
  • What CPD activities and research would bring about a significant improvement in the performance of our built environment to meet UK climate targets?

BSRIA Graduate Engineer, Joe Mazzon, who will brief the audience, said: “I am looking forward to participating at this prestigious conference. Engineering is, not only a life-long career choice, but a worthwhile one too, with many different and interesting disciplines. I graduated in 2011 and, therefore, have some invaluable work experience which compliments the industry. This unique set of skills enables me to bring a fresh stance to my role within – both the industry – and BSRIA.

With the worrying statistics at play here, it is essential that engineering graduates are attracted into the industry and that we support such new entrants.”

BSRIA will also be taking a stand to the conference – where delegates will be able to speak to BSRIA colleagues and network with other delegates.
