Electrical installations and electricity itself can be a "black art" for the uninitiated.

Introduction to Electrical Building Services provides a practical introduction to electrical theory and electrical building services systems to enable delegates to communicate more effectively with specialists such as electrical designers, consultants and contractors. It will enable the non-electrically minded to comprehend the discussions and requirements surrounding the subject.

To ensure a proper understanding of the basic algorithms used in electrical engineering, delegates will undertake some simple example calculations.

Facility, project and commercial managers, sales staff, general construction personnel without an electrical background and non-technical facilities personnel involved in operating buildings who require a basic appreciation of how and why electrical systems work.No prior knowledge is required although an appreciation of basic maths will be a benefit

• What is electricity?
• Voltage, current and resistance: Ohm's law
• Direct current and alternating current.
• Power and electrical energy
• Series and parallel circuits
• Transformers
• Power Factors 

Applications in building services:

• Cable sizing
• Light sources
• Fire detection and alarm systems
• Uninterruptable Power Supply
• Structured Cabling
• Renewable Energy
• Switchgear and Circuit Protection
• Codes and Regulations  

Registration and coffee from 9.00am. The course will start at 9.30 am and finish at 16.30

Delegates will have :  

• An overall understanding of how electricity is generated and how electrical systems operate
• An appreciation of the dangers of electricity and why these dangers exist
• An awareness of other sources of information for further study.
   

Delegates are provided with a copy of all the slides presented and a copy of the BSRIA publication Illustrated Guide to Electrical Building Services (AG 5/2005).  Copies of this publication are available for purchase from the BSRIA Bookshop

David Bleicher
David has a background in building services design, with experience of mechanical and electrical design both in the UK and in the USA. He joined BSRIA in 2005 and has worked on research projects, design reviews and he also leads the BSRIA training programme.  Read David's full profile. 

Pete Tse
Peter has extensive experience in the field of electrical design. He joined BSRIA in 2009 to provide fact based guidance and consultancy services that will help those involved in designing, constructing and operating services in buildings to improve cost, quality, time and predictability of performance.

Richard Forster
Richard trained as a lighting engineer and worked for Thorn Lighting on commercial and industrial lighting before becoming a product manager concentrating on new energy efficient light sources.
