Management of the commissioning process
Who should attend | Aims | Content and timings | Outcomes | Documentation
Whole-life value is ultimately a function of how well a building and its engineering systems perform and whether this can be sustained over the long-term.
However, there is often a gap between client expectations, design intent and delivered performance. Furthermore, the rigid separation between construction and operation means that many buildings are handed over in a state of poor operational readiness. These deficiencies have a detrimental effect on building control, energy use, equipment reliability, system durability, occupant comfort, worker productivity and environmental impact.
Construction project teams are increasingly acknowledging that they need to adopt a quality-focused process that addresses these shortcomings and therefore enhances project delivery. This process will need to clearly define the required performance outcomes at the very earliest stage of a project, and then verify and document that a building and its engineering systems are designed, planned, installed, tested, and can be used, operated and maintained to meet these performance requirements.
The good news for these project teams is that there is a process that can fulfil this function. It is called commissioning management.

Who should attend?
This course is intended for professionals involved in the design, construction and operation of the Built Environment. This includes building owners, building services consultants and contractors, architects, cost consultants, project managers, principal contractors and facilities managers.
AimsThe aim of the course is to enable Built Environment professionals to produce better buildings through improved management of the commissioning process. These better buildings will be operationally ready at handover, function in accordance with user and operator requirements and perform efficiently in use.
Content and timings- 21st century construction - an industry fit for purpose
- The 8 stages of project delivery
- Commissioning management- what is it and why do it?
- A journey through the commissioning management process:
* Preparation stage
* Design stage
* Pre-construction stage
* Construction stage
* Commissioing stage
* Pre-handover stage
* Initial occupation stage
* Post-occupancy aftercare stage
Registration and coffee will be at 0900. The course will start at 0930 and finish at 1630.
On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
- Recognise the crucial role that the construction industry needs to play in producing better business, social and environmental performance outcomes for the UK
- Describe the 8-stage project process that will help the construction industry produce better performance outcomes in the Built Environment
- Understand that commissioning management is a quality assurance process that starts at project inception and continues through the life of a building
- State why commissioning management plays a vital role in the delivery of successful construction projects
- Identify the purpose of the commissioning management process at each of the eight stages in the delivery of a construction project
- Evaluate if their company's approach to management of the commissioning process supports the delivery of better performance outcomes on construction projects
- Apply an improved approach to management of the commissioning process on their construction projects
Delegates will be provided with a copy of all the slides presented and BSRIA publication BG11/2010 Commissioning Process Job Book. Copies of this publication will be available from the BSRIA Bookshop in the second half of 2010.
Lunch and refreshments are provided.
