Introduction to commissioning

Who should attend | Aims | Content and timings | Outcomes | Documentation

Commissioning is a vital phase in the production of building services systems and is defined as The advancement of an installation from the state of static completion to full working order to the specified requirements. The importance of commissioning is often underestimated by design and construction teams and hence it is often neglected in the hurry to get the building completed on time.

This course provides detailed descriptions of the practical procedures required for the successful commissioning of air and water systems. In addition, advice is given on how to design a pipework or ductwork system such that it is commissionable, and similarly how to install the system so as to facilitate commissioning. The course is therefore useful for system designers and installers, as well as for people involved with the commissioning process.

The course is based around BSRIA's applications guides "The Commissioning of Air Systems in Buildings" and "The Commissioning of Water Systems in Buildings" which are commonly specified on most construction projects. Since 2006, England & Wales Building Regulations have required commissioning for all building services systems. This invariably infers compliance with the recommendations in the BSRIA Commissioning Guides.

Who should attend?

The course is intended for professionals in the building industry: building owners, designers, architects, M&E installers, pre-commission cleaning contractors, commissioning specialists and building energy performance assessors. A basic understanding of the layout of pipework and ductwork systems is required.

Aims

To explain commissioning procedures in air and water systems and provide detailed examples of their implementation on real projects.

Content and timings

Delegates will learn about:

Specifying commissioning.

Pipework and ductwork design considerations e.g.

  • pipe/duct sizing
  • pump/fan selection
  • valve/damper options and selection
  • flow measurement methods
  • suitable tolerances.

Pipework and ductwork installation considerations e.g

  • workmanship
  • accessibility
  • flushing provisions
  • venting and draining provisions
  • system pressure testing

Commissioning procedures e.g

  • instrumentation
  • pump/fan tests
  • proportional balancing
  • witnessing of results
