Valves
Performance testing of valves at BSRIA
BSRIA provides expertise and test facility for measuring flow rate coefficient, pressure drop, and valve characteristics on a wide range of different systems.
Those include: PICVs, butterfly and double regulating valves, venturi, orifice and ultrasonic flow meters, cold-water supply systems, hot-water supply systems, water supply and waste systems in buildings.
WHAT'S NEW
NEW standard test method for PICVs Pressure Independent Control Valves - written and produced by BSRIA in co-operation with the industry
In the absence of the standard test method for PICVs, and in support for those products, BSRIA has written a test procedure for their evaluation and will carry out the testing.
- The new test procedure, based on the existing EN standards, allows direct comparison of valve performances while providing information that can be used when specifying and buying such products.
- The test results can be compared with the designer's specification against manufacturers' technical data and recommended pressure differences.

BSRIA is starting performance testing of PICVs in its laboratory in Bracknell, UK, and is inviting the industry to take advantage of that to help them in their quest for higher efficiency products.
The procedure has been developed in co-operation with manufacturers so to ensure that it benefits the industry and the end users. We would like to thank the following companies for their valuable input:
- Belimo Automation UK, Broen, Crane Building Services & Utilities, Danfoss, Frese, Herz Valves, Honeywell, Raxcrest Valves, SAV Systems, Skanska and TA Hydronics UK.
Testing at BSRIA
The independent product assessment and verification are carried out to the BSEN standards and include:
- BS EN 60534-2-3 : 1998 Industrial-process control valves Part 2-3: Flow capacity-Test procedures

- BS7350:1990 Double regulating globe valves and flow measurement devices for heating and chilled water systems
- Valve sizes range from 15mm up to 100mm with flow rates 0.062min to 26.040 as specified in BS7350:1990
- Test results are presented in a technical report and a certificate of performance that are recognised on the international level.
