Building Performance Evaluation (BPE)
Building Performance Evaluation (BPE), also known as Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE), can unlock valuable hidden information for client requirements and design briefing. BPE can be used at any point in a building's life to assess energy performance, occupant comfort and make comparisons with design targets. Download BSRIA's introduction to BPE presentation on behalf of the Modern Built Environment KTN for more details.
BSRIA provides a range of services to conduct and support BPE, from the complete evaluation to providing energy monitoring instruments and benchmarking building performance.
As clients increasingly demand proof of performance, BPE is becoming required on many projects, particularly in the public sector for schools, offices and healthcare.
BSRIA's approach to BPE falls into three elements:
- A forensic walkthrough; an inspection to check the building's operation and whether there are any emerging problems or wasteful operational practices
- An energy survey; a breakdown of the energy used in a building by type of consumption e.g. heating, air conditioning,
lighting (download our energy survey case study for Oracle Corporation) - Assessment of occupant satisfaction; surveys and interviews of building users and occupiers
See our Herman Miller article for further information on how we conduct a BPE.
Soft Landings
A Building Performance Evaluation is an integral part of a Soft Landings project, which keeps designers and constructors involved with buildings beyond practical completion. Visit our Soft Landings pages for more information, a free download of the framework and details of BSRIA's support services.
