Building Information Modelling (BIM) Network

Building Information Modelling is receiving a great deal of attention in the technical press, and in the development of public sector procurement strategy. While BIM has been used by some organisations for a number of years to various levels of sophistication, it does seem that client groups are becoming more aware of the potential that BIM has to offer, and more of them are requiring it to be used on their projects. This means that BIM is likely to be more widely specified in the future. As well as the technology issues with developing and integrating different models for a project, successful implementation of BIM also requires a greater willingness to work collaboratively.

The BSRIA BIM Network is an opportunity for individuals from all parts of the building services industry to meet and discuss the implications of the technology and the new working practices that come with BIM. The Network is open to all BSRIA members, but at present it is providing a working group for the development of a new BSRIA guide on design deliverables for BIM. As such, the number of attendees at meetings is limited, but BSRIA would welcome additional comments via correspondence. Please email david.churcher@bsria.co.uk to get involved.

The BSRIA BIM deliverables guide will complement the existing BSRIA Design Framework, and will set out BIM-related design activities against an industry Plan of Work/Project Stage framework. The guide will also seek to define the levels of Model development appropriate for the different stages of the project process. The intention is to help consultants and contractors understand how far they should be going in developing Building Information Models at each stage of a project.
