Display Energy Certificates (DEC)
BSRIA provides much more than accredited Display Energy Certificates (DEC). Our 50 years' experience in the built environment will help you make real energy efficiency improvements and, in turn, better DEC ratings.

Examples of public buildings include Central Government, local authority, hospitals, other healthcare and education
The Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations (EPBD) introduced the requirement for DECs in public buildings in England and Wales from 1st October 2008. DECs must be prominently displayed in most non-domestic public buildings.
DECs show the actual energy use and operational rating of a building. They indicate its energy efficiency and CO2 emissions on a scale of A (best) to G (worst). DECs are valid for one year.
Why choose BSRIA?
- accredited DEC assessors to conduct full assessment
- experienced facilities and energy engineers to make practical recommendations for year-on-year energy improvements
- independent service with no vested interest in the results or recommendations
- engineers backed up by experts across the building services sector
Do I need a DEC?

- central government
- local authority
- hospitals and other healthcare
- education
Some privately owned buildings that provide services from public funds such as leisure centres, museums and theatres may also need to display a DEC.
If you are unsure, please contact BSRIA direct (lowcarbon@bsria.co.uk ) with your building details and purpose.
How to make improvements?
DECs are issued as standard with accompanying Advisory Reports giving simple, cost-effective recommendations for improvement. Although DECs need to be updated annually, Advisory Reports are valid for seven years.
However, obtaining a DEC and Advisory Report is just the starting point for improving energy efficiency. BSRIA brings a proven track record in facilities management and energy efficiency consultancy. We can evaluate the most effective and appropriate initiatives to make year-on-year improvements, whether quick wins or more strategically, such as monitoring and targeting and integration of low energy technologies.
